Painting Oil and acrylic on canvas. Very much a child of Covid when we all stopped and thought about life, the universe and everything. This work is named after Goya's "The sleep of Reason produces monsters" but features Theseus and the Minotaur plus malevolent butterflies and a jellyfish, (a jelly fish in Spanish is a Medusa). Butterflies are symbols of change but usually for the better. Theseus represents us and the Minotaur our fears and yet in the story of Theseus we can question the authenticity of the Minotaur as a monster and Theseus as a hero. So this painting is a question and a beautiful object. Colour in this work is subtle and used delicately and the composition is solid and calming on the eye. This is deliberate in order not to alarm the viewer, a device designed to put reason to sleep. It is work set by the middle sea, the cradle of civilisation and a warning wrapped up in beauty.
