About The Artwork
I was preparing a series of paintings featuring a caryatid from the British Museum in London, UK, when I discovered this warehouse at the Old Port in Montreal. I liked the idea of transporting the graceful marble statue to an oil-stained warehouse where she would be lit by an overhead light, as if transported by magic from her ancient place of origin into a contemporary urban setting. The setting is grimy and worn. The steel beams are rusty, the damaged doors and windows pierced by light. This is not a welcoming place. It seems impermanent, designed for use but not beauty. The ageless and beautiful caryatid does not belong here -- and yet her gesture suggests that she is about to impart a wise message.
