About The Artwork

Framed Angels © 2002-2022 - Hand Stitched Thread on Commercial Textile - (74” x 80”/ 188 x 203cm) **Sold on Commission (USA) ** Budget: $40,000** This piece is unusual as I had constructed it in April of 2002. Other commission projects and exhibition work became my priority, so this piece languished in a pile of over a dozen pieces waiting to be hand quilted and completed for eighteen years. Clients visited my studio in late January 2020 to begin the commissioning process. Unlike other clients, they requested to see any artwork that I had that was not completed. They had seen all my completed artwork and commission work on my website but wanted to see what I wasn’t sharing with the world. This piece was their selection, and the hand stitching began as my schedule permitted with a completion date of January 25, 2022. This piece took over 1056 hours to complete; majority of the time was the hand quilting (963 hours). Rarely is a single commission piece the only artwork under construction in my studio, other commissions overlap along with new artwork for exhibits. Detail image of the stitching can be seen here and a view of the back of the artwork really showcases the stitching.

I have been constructing textile artworks for over thirty years incorporating dense hand stitching which gives visual and physical texture to my work. I was born in St. Paul, Minnesota in 1963 and have had my studio in Cushing, Wisconsin since 1991. My work includes pieced work using commercial fabrics as well as rust pigmentation and non-traditional dyeing techniques. More recent work has been using whole cloth construction using my hand dyed and painted fabrics and rust pigmentation along with my signature hand stitching. Each piece is unique and starts with an idea from my subconscious and develops as I construct the artwork. Decisions are made regarding materials, technique, size, and sculptural stitching as the piece develops. Nothing is preplanned so the initial idea may not be even close to what the finished artwork reveals. My medium is thread on textiles, much like a painter's medium is "oil on canvas" or "acrylic on hard board". My work can be found in many private art collections around the world. Commission work keeps my schedule full for several years in advance. I exhibit my award winning artwork nationally in juried fine art exhibitions in galleries, museums, and art centers. I am represented by several fine art galleries across the United States. I am the author of several books available worldwide, describing my processes, artistic philosophy, and experiences with artist residencies.
