About The Artwork

The Dreamtime is the Aboriginal understanding of the world, and of it's creation. The Dreamtime is the beginning of knowledge, from which came the laws of existence. For survival these laws must be observed. Young men's initiation into manhood involves a long, solitary "walkabout" to sacred sites and "song-lines". The Dreaming world was the old time of the Ancestor Beings. They emerged from the earth at the time of the creation. Time began in the world the moment these supernatural beings were "born out of their own Eternity". The Earth was a flat surface, in darkness. A dead, silent world. Unknown forms of life were asleep, below the surface of the land. Then the supernatural Ancestor Beings broke through the crust of the earth form below , with tumultuous force. The sun rose out of the ground. The land received light for the first time. The supernatural Beings, or Totemic Ancestors, resembled creatures or plants, and were half human. They moved across the barren surface of the world. They travelled hunted and fought, and changed the form of the land. In their journeys, they created the landscape, the mountains, the rivers, the trees, waterholes, plains and sandhills. They made the people themselves, who are descendants of the Dreamtime ancestors. They made the Ant, Grasshopper, Emu, Eagle, Crow, Parrot, Wallaby, Kangaroo, Lizard, Snake, and all food plants. They made the natural elements : Water, Air, Fire. They made all the celestial bodies : the Sun, the Moon and the Stars. Then, wearied from all their activity, the mythical creatures sank back into the earth and returned to their state of sleep. Sometimes their spirits turned into rocks or trees or a part of the landscape. These became sacred places, to be seen only by initiated men. These sites had special qualities.

I am Italian-born, and grew up in Africa from the age of 12, in Zimbabwe (then Rhodesia). I studied Geology and Chemistry in Cape Town, South Africa, but I was always intrigued by philosophy, and art. I sought to answer Gauguin's three questions: "Where do we come from? What are we? Where are we going?" by living and assisting in the development of alternative lifestyle communities. Later I worked for many years in hi-tech/internet technology in the USA, UK, and the Netherlands before moving to la Gomera, and dedicating myself to painting. Artist's Statement My inspiration are the island of la Gomera, its people, and a constant flow of personal memories. I follow a method I call "chaos-based" painting. Whether engaged with a portrait or landscape I paint my expressionistic experience of the subject. More often I like to start a canvas empty of all concepts of what might emerge, without aim nor end-result in mind. I believe true art emerges from beyond me, and I am, at best, its instrument. So although my paintings are figurative, they often begin as abstracts, gathering form over time. You may see the results in the section called Gallery - Revelations. I sign my work as "brazza" - the Italian Africa-explorer - as a reminder to keep learning, and to meet new challenges with his grace, and magnanimity.
