About The Artwork

Golden. Golden started with just the word. It floated into my head as many of my ideas do. Then I begin to contemplate, I read, I roll the ideas around in my head. I look at fabrics and threads, dyes and inks, ideas start to come together, I start to draw and reference material, I have a story in my head. Then I begin, I start with the drawing, I bring in the materials and put them together with my sketch, then I mould them into my idea. Things take shape from there in a free flowing process until I somehow feel completion. The vine is always a part of my work as are spirals and I finish with my ‘Gypsy’ heart insignia. “Golden” is created from walnut shell dye, inks, deep warm honey and treacle shades, paisley, botanicals, angel wings - I don’t experience angels as warm and fluffy but magnificent and enormous - transformation, antique fabrics and threads, Boroboro techniques, embroidery, drawing, painting, dyeing, the interaction of sutures and threads etc, etc . . . . onto a backing of pure cotton. It is a deeply meditative and mindful process for me accompanied by the radio, music, silence involving hours and hours of crafting.

' Be Inspired and inspiring ' is my favourite phrase. I am constantly inspired in this beautiful creative world, sometimes my creativity overruns and my head starts to spin with ideas, I am often caught frantically scribbling down ideas and thoughts and plans. In fact I have more ideas and plans than I have hands or time for . . . Creating these pieces of art is an absolute pleasure and fills all of my senses when I work, I am totally engrossed and have become rather known for not answering my 'phone or door . . . apologies to all of my friends and family. xx I take inspiration from the creatures, sights, people and colours of the world. Whatever sparks my interest will become a piece of joyful creation. I emigrated to South Africa following a bit of tooing and froing between it and Britain over the course of twenty + years. I am British and after marrying a rather handsome South African twenty + years ago we eventually had a gorgeous child and wanted to raise her in the sunshine of this amazing, beautiful, positive place. We live near the Kruger National Park in the lowveld which is perfect for our bird watching, game viewing and camping tendencies. Living in Africa and spending a lot of time in the wildlife areas inspires me to paint what I see in the way that I see it. Beautiful, free, wild animals, massive vistas of land free from human encroachment, people unaffected by the grind of the city life. Freedom I guess . . . I do most of my work outside on my open veranda with a view of a beautiful estate and a lake. I hope you enjoy my work half as much as I enjoy doing it. If you have any questions, ideas or commissions, please contact me. We are now back living between the UK and Sicily!!!
