I start abstract works with no particular image in mind, concentrating at first on establishing a good balance of colour, tone and texture. As the work progresses a theme, image or idea will appear, and I then develop the work accordingly. Each work is built up from many layers of paint - in this case poured across the surface, imprinted with various natural and artificial materials, overpainted in places and then glazed with more layers of paint. This is a process which often takes a long period of time.

Abstract works are for the viewer to interpret, and everyone will see different things in them, although the title hints at my own feelings when creating this piece. I am usually inspired by nature – in this case by nature's close-up textures and organic shapes.

*This painting is shipped in a tube with its wooden stretchers and hooks. The stretchers are marked with N-S-E-W compass points to make it easy to restretch canvas.*

Only deep-edge canvas and artist’s quality lightfast colours have been used to create the work. The canvas is painted on the sides, stapled only on the back, and comes with picture hooks and thread. It is ready to hang unframed, although it can also be framed if desired. The painting is protected with a two-coat acrylic spray varnish.

About The Artwork

I put down the initial layers of this painting by pouring colors onto the canvas and pressing shapes into them. Circular abstract shapes which reminded me of leaves and vegetation began to emerge, so I developed this idea by painting around these shapes and creating further ones. However, I didn't try to make any of these shapes cross the line into representation - for example, by making them actually look like a real leaf or petal. Although I also create quite photo-realistic paintings sometimes, with works like this one I think it's better to leave more for the viewer's imagination. Whether I'm painting in an abstract or a more realistic style, most of my works refer back to nature in some way - its textures, shapes and colors.

I am an artist and writer with paintings in private and corporate collections in Turkey, the UK, the United States, Canada and Australia. I live in Adana, Turkey. I am a member of both local and national jury-selected artists' associations and often participate in Turkish-government sponsored exhibitions in other countries. I paint in both figurative and abstract styles, but most recently my interest has been in capturing the kind of details in nature that you would usually pass by without a second glance: things like weathered rocks, broken branches and dying leaves. The idea behind this 'Vanitas' series is perhaps that the value and beauty of the ordinary things in nature lies in their impermanence. Many of my works are built up of multiple layers over a long period of time − using a variety of techniques and tools. Layers of paint are poured, glazed, scratched, and rubbed away until the desired effect is achieved. Each exhibition I take part in brings me into contact with many artists and art lovers, whose feedback and reactions to my work I find invaluable. I continue to develop new techniques and explore new approaches in order to develop my personal response to the world around me.
