This was inspired by an experience i had when I was hiking the Track and Tower trail in Algonquin Park. I suddenly came upon this magnificent falls ringed by dead trees strewn over the slippery rocks. It was a challenge to capture the foam and fury of this raging torrent in a small sketch. Later on in my studio I decided to paint it quite large so the viewer could experience some of the discovery of a natural phenomenon. I felt the surging water and the textures of the dead trees could best be conveyed by selective work with the palette knife. I purposely left the painting very broad in execution so that nothing would detract from the overall effect.

"There are few more satisfying and emotive experiences than making marks on a piece of paper... The process of becoming an artist in the traditional sense is embracing the set of disciplines whereby one learns to give his marks greater tangible and universal meaning to a wider audience over a longer period of time"
