About The Artwork

Bright abstract - imbued with strong and gentle energy. Positive. Uplifting. Oils on canvas. I think "The Landing Place" will end up being a series. The name comes from a phrase that I have always put on cards to congratulate newly weds on their marriage . It came from a movie starring Australian Garry McDonald. He plays a grumpy old manager of a sheltered workshop, working with a bunch of 'clients' who are mentally handicapped adults. He has been doing it for years and initially seems to be dismissive of his charges. He hires a bright young thing, full of commitment and desire to make a huge difference - without recognising the reality of working 'within the system'. There is a pivotal moment in this 1990 movie (which I only saw the once) when Old Man and New Young Thing have their big argument. And Garry McDonald's character tries to explain that it isn't about being disinterested or not caring. It is because, within the system, 'all we can be for them is a soft place to land'. So, you say, what has that got to do with love? Maybe everything. I always thought that it beautifully summed up a life long relationship. And at any time within the relationship - from the first bloom of young love, through the every day chaos of families, to coming home to each other after maneuvering through the world, through facing the real tough stuff that happens, we need to be to each other "a soft place to land". This first Landing Place is a bright, fun, energetic place to land. I will go looking for others.... Hope you like it.
