The Fortune Teller Painting

Unlike many charlatans claiming to see into the future, this fortune teller possesses an immense gift of foresight. Like many who claim to have gifts enhanced because of odd physical attributes, her abilities are enhanced by her hermaphroditism. Seeing the world simultaneously from male and female perspectives multiplies the power of her visions exponentially. Unlike her father, she plies her trade for monetary gain. In her relatively short existence she has experienced great loss and heartbreak. Due to her abilities to see into the future and her physical nature, she finds it difficult to maintain deep relationships outside of her immediate family. Notes and references: For most deer species, female deer do not normally grow antlers. In rare cases of hermaphroditism, the subjects antlers are typically small and deformed. In my research, I found some examples of antlers growing at odd angles. In this painting, the angle references the large hats worn in the late Victorian or Edwardian era. The Three of Swords tarot card is generally accepted to signify pain or loss in matters of the heart. The card she is holding comes from the Sola Busca Tarot Deck. Created sometime in the late 15th this deck is regarded as the oldest, complete set of cards. This is the fourth painting in the “Unnatural Selections” series.
