About The Artwork
This is a painting of two young boxers sparring in the boxing gym. They are preparing for upcoming fights. I am attracted to boxing because of its action, color, and personality. I love painting the human figure especially when people are engaged with one another in action. I used pastel in this situation because of the intense colors of the boxing trunks and equipment. Pastel is direct and provides intense color as well as subtle grays. I am greatly influenced by Degas' ballerinas and his paintings of horses and jockeys. I have carefully studied George Bellows's boxing paintings as well. I unified the background with grays to focus on the action in the painting. I wanted those that view the painting to be drawn into the action. I purposely left some of the drawing strokes on the surface to create a feeling of action and intensity.

Bean Company in Freeport, Maine, Marvin Sadik, the former director of the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C. and the late philanthropist Elizabeth Noyce for her private collection. I have painted multitudes of children portraits throughout the years. I am now painting landscapes in oils and pastels and exhibiting my work in the Northeast of the USA.
