About The Artwork

Bright and colourful acrylic painting of a beautiful Siren with piercing blue eyes casting a spell into water. In Greek mythology, Sirens were dangerous creatures, who lured nearby sailors with their singing voices to crash their ships into the rocky coast of their island. I wanted to created a modern day version of this myth with vivid pinks and bright reflections. Sirens symbolise temptation and desire, so I wanted my painting to be sensual. But I didn’t want it to be massively sexual – anyone who knows my work will know that I don’t shy away from sex, but I wanted to create a more animalistic feel in this painting – something halfway between a beautiful woman and a strange creature. I used the pink and purple colours to represent femininity, and I wanted the bursts of yellow to look like light – electricity crackling from her hands across water like an electric eel; dangerous and deadly, but also intriguing. Her hand has been distorted by the water, almost as if she is melting into it and becoming liquid herself. I made her eyes slightly larger than life to emphasise her feral feel and her gaze is filled with desire, but whether it’s sexual desire or hunger is up to the viewer.

I'm a freelance artist, based in Leeds, and mainly work in acrylic, gouache and soft pencil, applied with delicate brushstrokes, bold palette knives, heavy graphite and smudgy fingers. Born within the wild hills of the northern Peak District, I began painting and drawing at a very early age and was a regular entrant to the Derbyshire Open Art Exhibition. When working for leisure, my pieces focus mainly on figurative subjects with dark, brooding and occasionally erotic interpretations. I primarily work on commission, which means I have developed a broad range of styles to suit customers’ needs. From pets to family members, precise buildings to abstract countrysides, delicate fairies to valiant superheroes and much more, I'm eager to take on any challenge and add my own twist. I've never formally studied art. I've been painting and drawing as long as I could hold a pencil or paintbrush and I've just developed myself organically. I had my first paid commission at the age of 16 and haven't stopped creating bespoke pieces since. I have exhibited at Buxton Open Art exhibition, and at various small galleries and pubs around Yorkshire.
