About The Artwork

In 2022, this painting was featured in the III Abierto Lumen in the Postal Palace of Mexico City, Mexico. In this case, it seemed to me that painting was the only possible way to make use of an image that had failed as a photograph. The snapshot I took one afternoon in 2005 at the Café Nuevo Brasil was poor - poorly illuminated from the back, underexposed, slightly out of focus. And yet, it had something that kept me from discarding it at the time. Partly, it was the circumstances. The Café Nuevo Brasil was a classic hole-in-the-wall in Monterrey, a city I found myself visiting for the first time. To me, it was a very important occasion: one of my works had been selected for the FEMSA Biennial, a vote of confidence that meant a great deal professionally as a self-taught painter finding acceptance in the trade. In part, I was attracted to the composition because it can be read as a profanation of Las Meninas, the renowned masterpiece in which Velázquez peers out from inside a portrait he is creating of the infanta Margarita. It is at the same time a heartfelt tribute to all the greasy spoons of the world. I like compositions with mirrors. I find that when they are transformed into paintings inside other paintings, into successive trompe l'oeils, it makes us want to step through them, like Alice. I also like chaotic, disorderly compositions with randomly scattered objects. And of course, I like compositions that play with light sources. Finally, I like psychologically complex compositions.

Shipping & Returns

Delivery Time:Typically 5-7 business days for domestic shipments, 10-14 business days for international shipments.

(U.S.A., 1969) As a multidisciplinary artist and writer residing in Mexico City, I generally work with oils on canvas, photographs, and graphite on paper with particular emphasis on layers, blurred movement, chaotic compositions, nostalgia, and obsession for detail. Much of my work has to do with environmental issues, particularly through performance art and "de-installation". I also do illustrations for children's books. NOTE: I do not use projection; I draw and paint directly onto paper and canvas. The digital photographic images I use are sketches, not blueprints. Hence, the effect is one of realism with a warmer touch, rather than hyper-realism.
