This was one of a series of paintings exploring the vast skies that dominate my local water meadows at Runnymede. Each painting, made over the course of one spring, showed different weather and a different time of day. This one happens to show a local hotel, well known to the PGA when it visits nearby Wentworth, at the time when the sun is low and sky is changing colour but you couldn't call it sunset yet. The clouds are painted quite boldly and vigorously and add a real sense of movement to the picture. These paintings were when I first started to get to grips with seasonality, an interest which has since grown into a wider attempt to picture time within my work. They contain a real sense of the weather and of being grounded in a particular moment which has been key to my more recent discoveries with relation to time.

Alan is an artist based in Surrey. From his studio in Staines-upon-Thames, he paints landscapes, investigates whatever catches his attention and is currently prototyping some top secret & beautiful things. He trained at Farnham and has shown in many open and group shows throughout London and the South East, has had one major solo show and has been artist in residence for a manor house in Buckinghamshire. His work is in many private collections. “A high proportion of my work is the local landscape. Initially this was nothing but a combination of convenience and a long term fascination with the depiction of space, but as I have dug deeper it has begun to act as a proxy for more personal ideas.”
