About The Artwork

The white round shape is rogue in the midst of long dark shapes, and within the collection this painting is also rogue, as it is (almost) monochromatic and dark while the other paintings are colorful and bright. This painting is a reflection on how our bodies can sometimes go rogue - function off the books, create anomalies, and all that, in the darkness of our insides. Seemingly beautiful, this painting is illusive, for what it holds, is Rogue. rogue noun ▪️a dishonest or unprincipled person: “you are a rogue and an embezzler” ▪️a person whose behavior one disapproves of but who is nonetheless likable or attractive (often used as a playful term of reproof): “Cenzo, you old rogue!” ▪️an elephant or other large wild animal driven away or living apart from the herd and having savage or destructive tendencies: “a rogue elephant” ▪️a person or thing that behaves in an aberrant, faulty, or unpredictable way: “he hacked into data and ran rogue programs” ▪️an inferior or defective specimen among many satisfactory ones, especially a seedling or plant deviating from the standard variety.

Born in Yerevan, Armenia, Shushanik Karapetyan is a New York based artist. Her work has been showcased at the National Association of Women Artists, Governors Island, BRIC, La Bodega Gallery, LIC Arts Open, Site: Brooklyn Gallery, and Art Mums United. Shushanik's paintings are informed by her work as a gestalt psychotherapist, placing significance on the present moment, being attuned to both internal processes and external influences as she works on a piece. While paintings begin with some form of structure (i.e. a seascape or a landscape), this structure is tentative and flexible and is often guided by moment-to-moment decisions, whether it’s the choice of brush, color, texture, or movement in the painting. There is often a repetitive piece to her work such as pointillist strokes with a filbert brush or sweeping long strokes with a flat brush. She is inspired by Georgia O’Keeffe, often communicating femininity, sensuality and organic motifs, as well as impressionist artists like Georges Seurat and Claude Monet, tapping into the ability of the human eye to blend points of colors on their own.
