A late 1920s scene set in Market Square Nottingham UK.
Based on a conversation I had with an old couple on how their parents first met.
Albert, a shy man had an eye for Alice for a long time. He noticed Alice always wore a red carnation pin in her hat or coat lapel.
He decided to give a lad some cash to deliver a posy of carnations & a letter asking to meet at the council house. That's the building behind the tram.
A regular meet up place for Nottingham sweet hearts was either at the left or the right lion statues either side of the Council house.
Albert watches for Alice's reaction to the letter from a safe distance to the right of the tram and sports a red carnation on his coat.
I added a self portrait of myself as a youth, the messenger & Albert in his usual confident pose as a front to hide his shyness.
Oil on stretched canvas with all edges painted as part of the scene. No need for framing.
