A vast expanse of cold, purest of snow and ice seven feet thick so that highways are built on it. Breathtaking dancing aurora borealis on darkened sky nights. Deeply frigid temperatures- minus 40’s for weeks. This is the rugged and intensely awe-inspiring landscape that is arctic Canada. The colours and the light are brilliant and seductive - strong, powerful reflections of this vast space and her power. To walk along a rocky outcrop on the shores of Great Slave Lake, Yellowknife North West Territory is a sensory consuming experience that inspires and overwhelms. The land, the wildlife, the people who inhabit this place are survivors. It can be an unforgiving place if one is not prepared for the elements. The sweeping vistas, the big sky, the scrubby forests of leggy black spruce which cling to the rocks and pockets of soil defy biological logic. For “Ravens’ Watch” I used strong, bright colors reflecting the true essence of the land. I want the viewer to be swept up into the work, to be held momentarily into the embrace and soulfulness of the North.

Kaija Savinainen is a professional artist whose studio is near Canada’s capital, Ottawa. She earned her Fine Art degree from the University of Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada, taught by an inspiring group of professors originally from the US, and UK who built that exemplary program. There, she excelled at painting, printmaking and drawing and received several studio awards and a faculty commission. She graduated with Great Distinction and was awarded the President’s Gold Medal. Her Nordic ancestral roots have given her a strong affinity for the environment. Her paintings offer insights into nature’s vulnerability but also, it’s aesthetic beauty. As she states, “Through my art I stimulate the viewer’s sense of where we are going with what nature has bestowed upon us. Nature needs our respect, and care more than ever these days”. Savinainen belongs to The Ten Collective, a group of artists who exhibit annually to rave review in the Ottawa area and online. Her works have been purchased by several universities, and the Alberta Art Foundation, and are in private collections in USA, Canada, Japan, and Europe.
