About The Artwork

Lauri Aaltio's painting series ”Dataus” raises the question what data exchange actually is. Now ”digitys”, or being online, has become one of the basic human needs, just as eating and sleeping. Does the human being feel good or bad within the neverending data stream? Aaltio depicts a true-to-life human character as a part of this digital environment. Caravaggio's grapes and other fruit have been turned into digital gadgets in Aaltio's world. Aren't they as common as grapes or apples in the days of the Renaissance? What has the world turned into under the influence of new communication tools? What is the good and the bad of them? What will future conservationists in art museums think when they find these gadgets in the ruins of our cities? Maybe digital technology is a modern Roman lead aqueduct, which eventually crushed the empire? Aaltio joins together the Renaissance manner of working and the modern age. It is up to the viewer, what ”digitys” and ”dataus” images actually mean from his point of view.
