The Mother and Child is a very popular subject in Western art. Often it is associated with the Virgin Mary and the Christ child but artists such as Mary Cassatt used it as a theme to celebrate the roles of women in domestic life. Other deities in African cultures take on strong maternal roles like the Orisha Yemaya. She is mother, protector and embodies attributes of beauty. In this image of The Mother and Child an 18th century slave woman takes on the Iconic image of the Virgin Mary and is also partially inspired by Guiseppe de Ribera’s painting of the Mother and Child in the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and is my way of commenting on the mixing of the African and the Western cultures.

Painting is my obsession. The desire to create images and concepts of a different world are coming from a source through me that I cannot explain. Through the years I remember even as a child a need to paint and draw in order to visualize my dreams. The images that I create now are an extension of my interests in Latin American magical realism, surrealism, and religious iconography. I fabricate gods, new religious deities, magical dressmakers, and mannerist angels. All of these figures are dwellers within the imagination that I have carried for a very long time and are my friends, companions, and iconic symbols to my inner world. In many ways it could be said that my work is an anti reality, a break from the facts. It is also my way of being an anti modernist, embracing religion, traditions, and exercising my hopelessly romantic obsessions.
