About The Artwork

This painting depicts a mother protecting her children from the trappings of their world. Included are images that show that motherly protection over a period of time—from the mother’s afro worn during the ‘70s to the ever-looming danger of the crack epidemic of the early ‘80s, symbolized by the powerful presence of the crack vial. Other images include her fashionable bamboo earrings of the late ‘80s, the new police patrol cars of the ‘90s (its presence expresses the on-going tension between residents and police). Finally the newly designed big-faced “benjamins” of the new millennium. There’s also a road of emptiness that leads to the early sunset of one’s life. At the top center, the most dangerous of all the trappings, the lethal tool all too readily used in connection with every other image in this piece. The children, despite all of this negativity, maintain a sense of innocence; ignorant to the dangers around them thanks to the covering that is the mother’s vast grip. Her drapery is regal mother, respected mother, spiritual mother. This mother represents all mothers, mother figures, or the mother as entire village and community. A community gathered together to raise every child.

Born and raised in Brooklyn, I grew up during a time when hip hop culture was just making it's way to the mainstream. With it came a burst of expressive freedom from an urban perspective... my perspective. My art represents the myriad spirit and emotion of urban life, with an emphasis on LIFE, as seen through my eyes, imagined in my mind and felt in my heart. That Life in my art is not limited to any one physical location, but expanded upon in an attempt to embrace a universal perspective. When I sit down to paint or draw, I try hard not to think with the idea of what one may consider acceptable, or what another may feel is appropriate. I just try to apply my artistic knowledge and experience to recreate whats in my mind, whether its through sheer imagination or direct and indirect experience. I do believe a colorful imagination, experience, knowledge and a mind open to receive more are principal in helping to nurture artistic growth, and that is what I try to apply in my work.
