About The Artwork

This is a geometric abstract art work with a painterly background in two distinct blue tones (wet on wet technique) interspersed with squares of colors that either recede or come forward. This artwork has a musicality to it and is part of my Marimba series. This art work, inspired by the colors of Guatemalan indigenous textiles and marimba music was painted on Arches mould-made 300 lb watercolor paper. I'm very interested in figure/ground interplay and in surface and texture exploration. I love to paint on Arches 300 lb watercolor paper - it is mould made, 100% cotton, incredibly sturdy and there is nothing else like it in the world. As an amazing fact, the Arches paper company was established in France in 1492! Notice the beautiful deckled edges this paper imparts. The artwork is signed in the bottom right corner.

I am an American artist and visual arts teacher. After teaching Visual Arts at BAICA in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and the Future Leadership Academy in Hainan, China, I am now teaching at the Cornerstone School in Ocala, Florida. I obtained a BFA degree with a concentration in painting and printmaking from the University of Michigan. I had my first individual art show in 1991 at the Luigi Marrozzini Gallery in Old San Juan, Puerto Rico, where I lived for 11 years before moving to Argentina in 1997. I have had numerous individual art shows in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and have participated in many collective exhibitions and art fairs. My artwork is found in private collections in the United States, Puerto Rico, Argentina, Mexico, Guatemala, Panama, Chile, Peru and Uruguay. I define my work as chromatic geometry, a trajectory I have followed relentlessly since 1991. I was awarded a Pollock-Krasner foundation grant for the year 2013. I received the 2012 Arte Espacio prize in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Artistic statement: My visual language is within the realm of geometric abstraction, expressly chromatic geometry. I find this to be the perfect milieu in which I can work with simple forms, without distractions, and in which I can experiment with the pictorial elements that inspire me the most: color, texture, pattern and movement. I have been inspired by indigenous textiles, especially from Guatemala, a place I have visited often. In my paintings and watercolors I strive to create a kind of visual and musical poetry of color and movement. I like to call this poetry of color "coloreography" because it combines, precisely, color and choreography.
