About The Artwork

This work is on 9 gsm cloud dragon paper. The work is mounted using a weak starch glue to a mount board undermount. It is presently in a 700 x 500 mm mount, attached using 'T' hinges made of a strong framers tape (reversible) and will fit straight into a frame of that size. The frame in the additional photos can be shipped with the work, but it is a very, very basic frame intended just to protect the work and the delicate paper. The weight of the work in the frame is 1700g without any packaging weight added. The outer dimensions of the frame are 740 x 530 x 22 mm. This is one of a three works using this particular style of calligraphy of the word 'Love'. The three works experiment with different papers and different embellishments and styles. In this work, the 'L' stands approximately 470mm high. The letters are built up gradually, in layers, to prevent bleeding. The first layer is done with a very dry brushed allowed to dry before further ink (chinese ink) is added. The style of the letters is inspired by Kufic, a style of script use in the very early Qur'ans. It is a very architectural, bold style. I first started to experiment with developing a Kufic-inspired style of script for the english alphabet for an interfaith art exhibition that I was asked to curate. For that exhibition, I produced a piece of calligraphy that deliberately juxtaposed a verse from the Bible and a verse from the Qur'an, mixing up the styles of the calligraphy. I am continuing to work on developing a calligraphic style inspired by Kufic. The red letter 'e', painted to resemble a stylised chrysanthemum, is because the red form of the flower traditionally symbolises Love. The choice of cloud dragon paper is purely because I love the paper. Because of the long fibres and loose knit of the paper, a brush has to be used to do the calligraphy. A pen, even a quill, catches in the fibres.

I was born in Anerley, Penge, UK in the year of the Rooster. All the rest of my family are Snakes.... :-) I've loved art all my life - I'm a compulsive doodler. I hope that I have now, through my artworks, taken doodling to a whole new level ;-) The main inspiration for my work is early Celtic. One day, many moons ago (more than I care to admit to), I saw a reproduction of a page from the Lindisfarne Gospels. I thought: "Wow! How do you do that?". So I set about trying to find out. Doodling alone can only take you so far. There comes a time when you have to seek out those who know more than you, and this led me to The Prince's School of Traditional Arts in London. I did look at all the usual art colleges, but we weren't really singing from the same hymn sheet, shall we say. At the PSTA I met many wonderful, unique, learned and inspiring people - such as Prof Emeritus Keith Critchlow, Dr Martin Lings, Dr Nassar Mansour, Aidan Hart and many others. Through their teachings and example, I gained new understanding of art, life, the universe and everything ;-) So I now probably fit in with standard art colleges even less than before. Is that good or bad? My paintings are entirely hand made and are executed mostly in egg tempera, acrylic and gold leaf on paper, calfskin vellum, glass or gesso panel. I make my own quills and egg tempera paint, regularly raiding local Welsh beaches for shells to use as paint palettes (they work well and they're free - what more can I say?). I do not, however, grow my own cows or make my own vellum (very yukky process). I am very happy to let someone else do that bit. Each painting can take up to four weeks to complete. Most of that time is spent on drawing out the design, using a set of Victorian compasses, a sharp pencil, a ruler and lots of tracing paper. I live in Burry Port, South West Wales with Himself and our large, dribbly dog.
