About The Artwork

The painting started as a portrait of an ex Fine Art student who is now a professional wrestler. I struggled with the painting and the figure became sublimated into graffiti inspired by some I had seen in Rome which included a fragmented poster of the virgin Mary. While wondering what to do with the painting I was contacted by person I had painted back in 1983 who wanted reproductions of the paintings I had made of him and that were shown on TV when I was interviewed during my Sunderland Football Club residency. I thought it would work to paint him again and I did so using a previous painting as a reference.
