I start abstract works with no particular image in mind, concentrating at first on establishing a good balance of colour, tone and texture. As the work progresses a theme, image or idea will appear, and I then develop the work accordingly. Each work is built up from many layers of paint - in this case poured across the surface, imprinted with various natural and artificial materials, overpainted in places and then glazed with more layers of paint. This is a process which often takes a long period of time.

Abstract works are for the viewer to interpret, and everyone will see different things in them, although the title hints at my own feelings when creating this piece. I am inspired by nature – sometimes close-up textures and organic shapes, sometimes light and weather, and sometimes nature in the widest sense of the cosmos. If you have any questions about this particular artwork, feel free to contact me at the email on my profile page.

*This painting is shipped in a tube, and can easily be restretched by your local framing shop.*

Only deep-edge canvas and artist’s quality lightfast colours have been used to create the work. The canvas is painted on the sides, and protected with a two-coat acrylic spray varnish.

About The Artwork

Everyone sees different things in an abstract painting, and that is part of the joy of abstract works. The viewer meets the artist half way and participates in completing the work in their mind. The title of this work reflects the fact that the shapes in it reminded me of turning, rotting leaves, and therefore of nature's impermanence. However, the person who bought this work said that it reminded her of amber, and the organic matter which is locked up in pieces of ancient amber. I can see what she means, and I think that 'amber' would make a nice name for this painting. You may see something completely different in the painting altogether, and would have given it a different name. I painted this work by pouring fluid acrylic inks onto the canvas, moving the colors around with kitchen utensils and pressing plastic sheet into the wet paint. I then isolated areas of the composition that I liked and painted over other areas in white so that I could pour on more layers. When I was happy with the overall composition, I finished off the work by painting with traditional brushes and acrylics. Whatever the work reminds you of, I hope you enjoy looking at it.

I am an artist and writer with paintings in private and corporate collections in Turkey, the UK, the United States, Canada and Australia. I live in Adana, Turkey. I am a member of both local and national jury-selected artists' associations and often participate in Turkish-government sponsored exhibitions in other countries. I paint in both figurative and abstract styles, but most recently my interest has been in capturing the kind of details in nature that you would usually pass by without a second glance: things like weathered rocks, broken branches and dying leaves. The idea behind this 'Vanitas' series is perhaps that the value and beauty of the ordinary things in nature lies in their impermanence. Many of my works are built up of multiple layers over a long period of time − using a variety of techniques and tools. Layers of paint are poured, glazed, scratched, and rubbed away until the desired effect is achieved. Each exhibition I take part in brings me into contact with many artists and art lovers, whose feedback and reactions to my work I find invaluable. I continue to develop new techniques and explore new approaches in order to develop my personal response to the world around me.
