Having read Rudolf Steiner’s 'Light for the New Millennium', various biographies and letters of Helmuth von Moltke (1848 - 1916) to his wife Eliza von Moltke, I painted this portrait of the controversial General, who was chief of the German General staff at the outbreak of World War One. Rudolf Steiner observed that many of the principal figures who shaped world history at that time were "sleep walking" into disaster. The portrait is based on a photograph of the General, and an imaginary perception of his dream world in the aftermath of his decision to take Germany into the War.
