About The Artwork
The Book of Genesis describes a visit to Jacob's tent by a stranger one evening, and as common at the time for enjoyment, they engage in a wrestling match. They contest the match all evening, until dawn, when Jacob realizes it is God. There are only four instances in the bible where a man has looked on the face of God and lived. God was pleased with Jacob here, and promised him many future blessings. A few classical painters have treated this encounter, including Rembrandt and Delacroix, and this is my own interpretation. I chose a windblown, sandy terrain set against a rising misty sun, with the two men wrestling beneath a broad-leafed tree, and several women looking on from a distant well dug into rocky ground.

The nude figure is a favorite topical feature in his work, and is often interpreted in neo-expressionist style. Another important category of his work includes the rugged coastline near his home.
