Gloria Euphorbia Painting

What is THAT? I never saw any bloom like this before I took a walk one day up the hill in back of our house in Western Colorado. The brilliant colors of the flowers and leaves and the natural composition of the surrounding rocks and grasses pulled me in. And, what an intrepid piece of flora it is to force its way up through all the rocks and gravel. I made a postcard-size color sketch on the spot and reproduced it as a 10x14 print that hung in our living room for years. Recently I came across my reference photo from 10 years past and decided to recreate the scene on a larger scale. I used iridescent electric blue and duochrome aquamarine to capture the blue leaves. Duochrome copper and cabo blue capture the reflected glow from the surrounding scene on the stones hiding in the shadows. I'm still not sure exactly what this plant is, but it appears to be a glorious member of the genus euphorbia, also known as spurge.
