The Cross of Christ is one of the 2 great events in human history. The resurrection being the second great event. As a Christian artist it has been my desire to depict the descent from the cross in a contemporary manner. I chose to bring the event into the immediate foreground. It was my desire to confront us, as viewers, with the meaning of this powerful event. The Creator of the universe is now lifeless and helpless in the hands of those he came to suffer and die for. It is intended to challenge us as to what we will do with Christ as we contemplate the meaning of His resurrection. The Christ figure is pallid in color. His flesh color contrasts those that are removing him from the cross. The irony is; according to Christian theology, they are dead in their sins and need his gracious forgiveness to enable them to come alive on the inside. My hope is the viewer will drawn into a rather confrontational image. My desire is; the viewer will think deeply about the meaning of the Cross. The models for the painting were my 2 sons and their cousin. I chose to use oil on canvas because it is a medium that gives me an opportunity to portray a powerful event like no other medium.
