About The Artwork

Price includes delivery anywhere in the U.S. in a custom wood crate (required for insurance). Saatchi *might* be agreeable to a reduced price for local (Cincinnati) collectors since I can hand-deliver the painting. This is a re-worked painting of one I did in 2011, The painting will be dry in a few days, I will ship asap to the buyer. The painting is based on a black & white photo. From my maternal grandma's side of the Jessee family, seated left-to-right, "Bull", Asa, & Ida Frances. The boy in the back is probably one of Asa and Ida's sons. He is wearing a Huck Finn hat, likely colored caramel, with matching jacket. The 2 men are wearing versions of felt slouch hats. I am still working historical sources to determine what style Ida's hat is. Created in oil over acrylic on canvas, the rich application of the oils contrasts with the harshness of life in the coal mines. Hands are often the most apparent sign of such a hard life. I've chosen to emphasize them in this painting. My father was missing part of a finger due to a mining accident. He was more fortunate than many.

Shipping & Returns

Delivery Time:Typically 5-7 business days for domestic shipments, 10-14 business days for international shipments.

I welcome offers. Price includes delivery. For local collectors (Cincinnati, Ohio, USA), I can hand-deliver the item, if you like. My work uses texture and color. For oil paintings, the canvas is usually rough weave stretched over a frame hand-made by me. Application with putty & palette knives, and occasional brush work enhances texture. Colors are directly from the tube or with minimal mixing with other oil colors. None are casually made. All live in a space and most paintings take months/yrs to create. I studied drawing & painting under John Stewart, then painting under the mentorship of Frank Herrmann. Frank changed the way I thought about painting. Merlene Schain was an informal mentor, encouraging me. Born in a town (in Virginia) of 6 families, we moved to Cincinnati, Ohio when I was still in a stroller (see me in A Day in the Park). First memories include love of color. Raised by a single mom, I grew up with 1 sister (now deceased) and 1 brother, plus a bazillion relatives. Married to the best person ever for about 35 yrs, I have 4 children, each special of course. Family is the best part of my life.
