About The Artwork
The image of Ophelia in her watery grave has been one of my favorite subjects, especially when rendered by the pre Raphaelite painters from England. In recent study for this exhibition I came upon by chance the story of a young slave woman who was killed by her slave owner who wanted her but she refused him. He sent her body into the ocean after her death and mourned her. I saw a performance of this on Youtube of Bomba dancers portraying this story in a fiery dance unlike anything I had seen before. The very image of The Slave girl floating away into the waters is another connection to the goddess Yemaya and how she takes back her children into the waters into the afterlife.

Painting is my obsession. The desire to create images and concepts of a different world are coming from a source through me that I cannot explain. Through the years I remember even as a child a need to paint and draw in order to visualize my dreams. The images that I create now are an extension of my interests in Latin American magical realism, surrealism, and religious iconography. I fabricate gods, new religious deities, magical dressmakers, and mannerist angels. All of these figures are dwellers within the imagination that I have carried for a very long time and are my friends, companions, and iconic symbols to my inner world. In many ways it could be said that my work is an anti reality, a break from the facts. It is also my way of being an anti modernist, embracing religion, traditions, and exercising my hopelessly romantic obsessions.
