About The Artwork

This painting is about "beauty amongst the broken." I have done several paintings of this rock near the seashore. It is unattractive and has been battered by the sea for centuries. At the same time, it is surrounded by the beauty of Creation. Despite nature's relentless assault, the rock stands firm and secure. Nature around the rock continues to go through cyclical changes. The rock does not. It is unattractive compared to the beauty around it. However, it offers us a beauty that does not change. The prophet Isaiah said; "There was nothing beautiful or majestic about his appearance, nothing to attract us to him" (NLT). And King David said; "He alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress where I will never be shaken" (Psalm 62:2 NLT). I am inspired by the landscapes of John Singer Sargent and George Bellows. They painted directly from life. This painting was done "Plein Air" as well. I love the challenge of the changing light and atmospheric conditions. I want the viewer to experience the powerful Maine light across the forms of nature.
