Battersea Power Station Painting

When I started research for this image, I was intending it to be part of my Japanese Poetry series. I was working from a poem that roughly translates as "I don't know about the people, but all the scarecrows were crooked" and I began with the observation that, from a distance, cranes look like scarecrows. When I settled on Battersea as the location, I mentally switched things round as the cranes were bird-like and cctv towers had arms and heads. I've long been alarmed by London's redevelopment and this seemed like a rich but tenuous metaphor. While I was making the painting, the hospitality scandal that enveloped the Westminster planning department emerged and the Malaysian government started looking at corruption within it's investment in the site. As the painting developed I became caught up in the site and it became a celebration of the power station, dynamism and perspective as much as it was a broader, poetic critique of one of London's major problems. I'm especially happy with how the glass fronted apartments on the right came out - when viewed from a distance they disappear into the sky, which I suspect is what the architect intended, but when viewed close up and combined with the exaggerated perspective, they crowd the power station and appear to be trying to push it into the river. This painting is made on thick MDF board which has been sealed and double primed with a primer that has retained broad brushstrokes, giving the whole painting an extra level of dynamism and life. Like all my paintings I have only used top quality oil paints which give rich and subtle colours and should last for many, many years. Because of the thickness of the board, this one is quite heavy. The painting is framed in a simple walnut veneer tray frame with a small shadow gap.
