About The Artwork

I’m in my late 40s and you’d think I’d have worked this out before now. But I don’t seem to be able to control my subconscious mind most of the time. Take this painting of Bathsheba Everdene. That ‘of’ is quite ambiguous, in the sense that the original motivation was to do a painting of Julie Christie as Bathsheba Everdene. (I was brought up in the countryside and fell in love with lots of local girls over the years. Then one night I watched Far From the Madding Crowd at my friend Ian’s house and I was bewitched by the sight of Julie Christie as Bathsheba Everdene. Such unattainable beauty was enough to make a country boy go mad – or leave for America/Australia or spend the rest of my days writing sad folk songs.) But as I began painting – and Julie Christie did appear through the mist of my imagination now and again – I kept noticing one of theachers who took my history A level class (1780 to 1850) in our last two terms and who used to say the phrase “working class consciousness” in a lovely, slow Welsh accent. Every time I hear those words I go a bit funny – though in this day and age it’s not the sort of thing that people talk about much, which is bad for political discourse. But good for my state of mind. There are other people in there too, I reckon, but my subconscious mind doesn’t cough up all its secrets at once.

Shipping & Returns

Delivery Time:Typically 5-7 business days for domestic shipments, 10-14 business days for international shipments.

I am what is generally known as a new wave pop folk artist. Usually I work by sitting at a desk with my head in my hands staring at the wall for several weeks, before jumping up and doing a painting in a few minutes. After which I kiss it lovingly - though only when it's dry. My technique is based around putting down various colour layers - with hands, brushes, knives, bits of rag or old gloves - adding new colour quickly and then scratching away wet paint to show the layer below. This is in part an attempt to reveal the perceived mask/veneer of subjects, be they lanscapes, people or memories. It also works on a more sensual level, allowing me to attack my own paintings and crack them open a little bit. Although I'm now older than John Lennon was when he died, and Dino Zoff was when he collected a World Cup winner's medal, I like to think of myself as an emerging artist. I'm just emerging in slow motion.
