About The Artwork

Since I paint on steel I have decided that I should make at least one painting on wood per year, as “homage” to my older technique. And I must admit that every time I do it I have the pleasure of feeling the warmth of this material again, and especially of taking advantage of the structure of the #chipboard, cos even if I paint in a “fine” way, its wood chips will still give a rough effect to the brush stroke. I love it, and I love the fact that for this painting the “accident” was as important as for the rust on steel. *** After making the background with acrylics and drawing the figure, I started giving a green base to some parts of the body, without covering the surface completely, and I realized that I didnt need to paint the figure completely, I didnt need to show anyone that I could do it. I prefered suggesting, hiding, more than exposing. The red/orange dot you can see above on the left was also an accident (a little piece of plastic felt on the wood while making the background), and I liked it, so I glued it. *** Fragility is one of the features of human being which I love most.

Sabatino Cersosimo was born in Turin in 1974. He studied advertising design and then received a Degree in Painting and Decoration at the Academy of Fine Arts of Turin in 1999. Since 2011 he lives and works in Berlin. Following a line that has its roots in a certain expressionist painting (especially the Viennese Secession) but evolves through the modern mediterranean and english realism, he uses basically two surfaces: metal and wood. Since he mainly paints with oil and oxidation on steel plates, the concepts of time, will and chance have been crucial to the development of his research. Art is historically considered eternal, but Cersosimo's paintings underscore art’s metamorphic nature. Here, we witness artwork as it is developing, shifting, and in some cases, mutating into other forms, much like the elements of nature on the planet. Cersosimo's paintings mirror constellations of humanity in tiny particles. In doing so, they feature many of the commonalities shared among human beings across culture, language, gender, and race.
