Aloha Painting

This painting depicts the Hawaii Motel signage of a still working motel in Daytona Beach, Florida. The sign has a history of revisions over the years including a change of direction of the upper sign by 180 degrees, the post for the upper sign repainted black, the spears on either side of the Hawaiian dancer removed, the dancer repainted (poorly) and also removal of the neon lettering in the signage under the dancer and repainted in a more casual typeface. Here I have in a sense "restored" a few items such as the spears, pole to look like bamboo, painting of the dancer as close as I could to original look, and the neon letterforms and design in the lower sign. These "restored" tidbits of the painting were from some amount of research finding older images and a postcard of the motel so that I could include them in my own reference photo. All of the signs I paint I have photographed myself and choosing the best composition or a combination of them end up being a portrait of them, keeping their character and patina of the day I experience them. I enjoy a fairly realistic style with these signs, and I thought that this one lent itself to a very graphic geometric break up of the space. Sometimes the realism can be deceiving, but when taking a closer look you can see the brushstrokes. I am hopeful people will enjoy this classic icon of mid-century modern design so we don't forget the fun and kitsch look of the neon signage era.
