About The Artwork

People, their shape, complexities, feelings, their skin ... humans lie at the heart of my work. My model for this work is an inspirational classical greek sculpture of Ariadne, created over 21 centuries ago, copied in Victorian times, now in a Liverpool gallery. A century before Christ, the original model for this fantastic sculpture, so full of life, was herself so full of life too... This multi-media work re-creates her in today's shattered world: she's become a painted mosaic of crushed glass. I love the response of glass to light: its sharpness and smoothness delights me. This artwork includes drawn, photographed, digitised, drawn and painted elements: it appears fractured and broken, yet is alive with colour and life. This one-off original work is painted, printed and drawn on canvas, stretched on a frame, prepared and ready for you to hang. It's signed on the front and back, and has a certificate of authenticity.

Tony Roberts was born in Kent in 1946. His professional career as an artist started early, working with pen and brush as a young monk. Now, in retirement and long out of monastic life, his artistic practice has greatly expanded, including glass sculptures and canvas works in private and public collections worldwide, mostly to commission. Much of his current work involves multiple disciplines and media in each single work.
