About The Artwork

This is a site specific installation created for a window vitrine gallery which is only viewable from the outside, creating a division between the artwork and the viewer. The viewer must peer through the openings in the cut paper and through the glass to explore the worlds within the installation, and they have to physically move their bodies to experience the entirety of the work and various elements and landscapes within the cut forms. Surprises await every glance, and contortion of your body. This work is part of a series of works based on tunnel book structures, which use layers of flat material and space to explore artificial and natural landscape forms and the viewer’s relationship to space, movement, and perception. Phenomenology influences how I approach my work and the viewer’s role, while intertwining ideas about ecology and the ephemerality of our environment.

Erin Oliver is a multi-disciplinary artist whose practice includes painting, drawing, and large-scale installation. She integrates phenomena of a place to investigate ideas about abstraction and artifice, cyclical processes, and natural patterns. Through an intuitive making process, she responds to the landscape and uses abstraction to deconstruct natural imagery through drawing, cutting, layering, and suspending ephemeral materials in space. The environments she constructs in both her paintings and installations become surrogate landscapes, acting as portals to transport the viewer to enchanting fantasy worlds. She conjures abstracted biomorphic forms from nature to evoke calming biological responses. These encounters aim to facilitate a sense of presence and connection to the surrounding environment as a reflection of ourselves.
