About The Artwork

The image of "Orexis" visually tells us the story of the violence that the same person can exert towards himself, due to social pressure and the desire to belong, coming from an emotional lack that produces a psychological "hunger" that It leads the individual to modify their physical appearance and break their mental health in favor of conforming to a socially accepted ideal of beauty but which is basically artificial, since it is a social construction, which is extremely subjective, but which still has the sufficient force to alter the self-perception of individuals, a perception that can sometimes also be exploited to be used as a tool of political power and ideological control that also exercises its power and influence, sometimes violating the bodies of individuals. subjecting them to a canon of beauty that will always be a cultural construction, from the creation of the first empires to the development of the European colonialist powers, the system of power was not only limited to building the foundations to build a Western civilization based on a system sociopolitical whose power scheme that has been constructed by Western culture, became an omnipotent and omniscient presence that encompassed all sociocultural aspects of human existence including sexuality and beauty, because as an old Roman saying goes "The fish begins to rotting in the head.” This idea is symbolized within the image as the fish skeleton that does not have flesh or life, but is only an empty structure, which no longer supports anything, because it represents the decline and emptiness of Western civilization in opposition to the skeleton of the fish is the figure of Venus, goddess of love, beauty and fertility from Roman mythology. The figure sculpted by Albert Bertel Thorvaldsen is the epitome of an artistic form that represents perfection and ideals of beauty in accordance with the canons and aesthetic norms of the Greco-Latin culture on which contemporary Western civilization was built.
