This work and the others in the series were inspired by Victorian travel photography. I have tried to use the camera here as a sort of time machine, producing prints as they would have appeared over 100 years ago. By using a plastic Holga camera and exposing on film I have tried to replicate the specific feeling of tranquility of those original Victorian photographic views of ancient architecture. Very long exposure times for film in the late 1800's meant that any sense of the instant vanished, with little sense of movement evident. Architecture and artefacts were therefore ideal subjects for their photographs. I chose a small print size for these images as this again resembles Victorian glass plate photographic printing. My images were taken on a slow film and the negatives were subsequently digitally scanned and printed with the highest quality archival inks on Canson Baryta Photographique 310 gsm paper, which translates Black and White in much the same way that traditional wet process paper does. Paper size is 21cm x14.8cm. Image size is 15 x 12 cms. Signed, dated, titled and edition number on verso. Sent with a Certificate of Authenticity.

Born in 1955 in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne and could not wait to get away. Spent time after finishing an ignominious school career in Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan Pakistan, India and Nepal. Then studied Photography at Sheffield Poly, starting in 1979. Did Teacher Training and taught for 1 year at a school in North London which was more than enough. Subsequently worked for Warner Brothers in a non photographic capacity and the BBC both Teaching and Photographing. I have recently returned to working with traditional, wet processes alongside digital. The images in my portfolio start in the 70's and go through to the present day. www.ianhoskin.co.uk
