About The Artwork

I have spent decades looking at cities and trying to identify the essential elements of my favorite places. This Urban Views series of paintings is part of that exploration, and the Yerba Buena and Potrero Hill neighborhoods in San Francisco are some of those places. San Francisco has many distinct features. Some are obvious, like the steep hills and the Golden Gate Bridge. Others are a little more subtle, like the colliding street grid in different neighborhoods, the particular mix of old and new, and the roofscape (is it spiky with lots of variation or is it a more continuous contour?). The spire of St. Patrick's church and all the homes on distant Potrero Hill survived the 1906 earthquake and fire, but most of the buildings in the Yerba Buena area were built since 1980. The canvas is finished on all edges and arrives ready to hang, no framing required.

A native of San Antonio, I recently lived in San Francisco for 18 years and previously lived in New York and Paris. I am deeply committed to city culture both today and through the centuries, especially through the lenses of architecture, music, literature, history, and of course, art. While I appreciate abstraction and distilling to essences, I am more excited by the richness of complex layering and simultaneous meanings.
