This painting is about boundaries. As we reflect on 2020 (and its challenges) and peer through thresholds that invite us into 2021, we see many new opportunities for belonging. We are learning to reconnect and reengage with others and rediscover the things that bring meaning to our lives. It may not be far-fetched to see these thresholds (windows, doors, entryways) as boundaries since they are markers of separation between things that exist inside and outside of them. Many cultures also see thresholds as spiritual markers that separate what we can see from what we cannot see - they serve as channels between the temporal and the spiritual worlds. In the past, we have used boundaries to ward others off and destroy identities that make us similar. As we stand at the threshold to a new year, I pray that we erase irrelevant boundaries and redraw them to include others based on the differences that make us all better together. Let's open our doors (figuratively speaking, of course) and retune our hearts' frequency to the things that are not of this world - love for our neighbors, a peace that is actuated by gratitude, and infectious joy.

I use Yoruba principles of art in my work. Some are Ona (the embellishment of form), Ara (creativity), Ere (improvisation), pipe (completeness) and tutu (coolness). I draw inspiration from the work of the 1960s Bay Area figurative expressionists (Diebenkorn, Oliveira, Brown, Wonner, Bischoff, Park etc) as well as Henri Matisse and Mark Rothko.
