About The Artwork

Oil Painting - (122x122cm /48” square) 2021 Signed on the reverse. Unframed. Stretched - Can be hung unframed, (no hanging hardware included) Utopia was painted after a walk through the city - the artist was taken with how the different architecture reflected the inner world of the architect . Then within the buildings were other inner worlds - Individual spaces and homes, the outer expressions of the people living in them. She started thinking about this idea of Utopia, a place where our dreams are made real and thought that perhaps without the compromise of life our dreams would be a bit hollow and perhaps the truth of Utopia is what we bring to the world. From the artists Yielding collection - paintings inspired but the Taoist phrase “The softest thing overcomes the hardest” Lao Tsu These paintings examine softness as strength. Playing with forms inspired by water, fire and smoke. Utopia is painted in an alla prima technique - wet into wet paint created in one sitting. The surface is painted with the dark ground and subsequent layers are painted in the lighter colours - pulling the dark shades into the light forms. The artist moves with the paint - using her whole body in the creation of these flowing forms - like a dance. The subject of Utopia is presented as a visceral shifting form - connected to the idea that though we seek utopia in buildings and places - it is within us all the time. “I want the viewer to feel the energy of this painting - to connect to the movement and subtly shifting forms and feel a sense of inner peace. Inner utopia.” Genevieve Leavold This painting tells a story of a journey of self discovery, like all of Leavold’s work. It has a sense of mystery and calm energy. It is a statement piece which would create a bold statement in a formal entertaining space. This painting will be shipped rolled and will need to be stretched on a frame for hanging. All works are sent with a certificate of authenticity from the artist. If you have any questions please get in touch.

Genevieve Leavold originally trained and worked in Theatre Design before taking the decision to return her focus to painting. She completed studio courses at Central Saint Martin in 2007 and 2012.
