This landscape painting is of a subject that I enjoy painting very much because it allows me to play with colours quite freely. Here I had a longing to explore Red, so the work is all about the depth of colour really. I applied layer after layer of different reds, varying from dark purplish ones to pale cerise. Then to create the distance, tested out a variety of blues and teal greens which might describe the mountains. I felt that the sense of huge open space in the foreground was working well enough to hold a vivid orange stripe or two - useful for providing a little more detail here and there. The bright green flecks dotted about on the horizon give a sort of connection between the two colour bands. I had a lot of enjoyment with this little painting and hope you have liked reading about it as well as looking at it. 'Towards Blue' is painted on a professional gessoed wooden panel which is 1.5cms deep. I always use the best artist quality paints as the colours are very important to me. The painting comes ready to hang unframed.

www.chrissiehavers.com Represented by Cambridge Contemporary Art. The landscape is my main source of subject for painting - particularly the orderly impact on the landscape of human habitation and farming. The framework imposed by fencing hedges ditches etc and the impact these divisions have on the land is always interesting. Colours lent to the land for a few months by growing crops is another element. The rather harsh lemon of the rape or mustard crops, the cool blue of a linseed field, the effervescent mixture of echinacea flowers - all these colours provide problems for an artist. While they are very dramatic , visually they don’t sit well with the native trees and hedge colours, but I am drawn to them as a subject on exactly that account. This is what inspires my work - colour.
