The Bride Print

This artwork is inspired from the Albanian legend of Rozafa, who was sacrificed with the aim of building a castle. She was the wife of the youngest of three brothers, who were building the castle all day, but at night the foundation walls fell down. The honest brother kept his “besa” and said nothing to his wife about the deal the brothers made, as instructed by a wise old man, that whoever of the wifes brings their food the next day, was to be sacrificed and buried in the wall of the castle, so they could finish building it, and the foundations to stay put and last forever (while the two eldest brothers broke their promise and quietly told their wives everything)…She didn't protest and she accepted being sacrificed but, worried about her infant son, made a request: when they wall her in, to leave a hole for her right eye, for her right hand, for her right foot, and for her right breast, so when her small son starts to cry, she would cheer him up with her right eye, she would comfort him with her right hand, she would put him to sleep with her right foot, and wean him with her right breast. And to let her breast turn to stone and the castle flourish, and her son become a great hero, ruler of the world.
