About The Artwork

This is the beginning of a new direction in my series. I reference DIY techniques weaving them into my abstract painting process. For example, this piece is the very first time that I decided to use a pre-stenciled rubber roller like a paint brush. The rollers are typically used to create a wallpaper or textile pattern in DIY projects. I also discovered chalk paint (which is another great paint for DIY projects - mainly restoring furniture), and the rubber roller affects created a "lace-like" quality. I'm interested in layering these ideas that are typically used for decorative purposes into my own painting process that is very expressive. The DIY techniques originate in a structured environment that intend a specific purpose or outcome. On the contrary, within the context of abstract painting, those elements are broken completely down, the roller taking the place of the brush, for example, to create gestural mark-making, leaving bits and pieces of the patterned element but not the whole. Inherently this act is going against the tool's original intent to re-create something else entirely.

www.kjnstudio.com I’m a painter who primarily works in acrylics but also experiments in multi-media, collage and chalk paints on a variety of surfaces. My visual inspiration is sourced from the interior design and home decorating industries. Color is also another important aspect of my work, primarily drawing from pre-mixed palette swatches from hardware stores. I’m interested in blurring the boundaries between the contemporary and decorative art worlds. I also experiment with simple do-it-yourself (DIY) techniques, that are typically prevalent within the home decorating market, and re-contextualize them within a modern painting framework.
