Like the “non-figurative” but “lyrical” painters in the 1950s, who were “breaking with both traditional figuration and classical abstraction; Nicolas de Staël refused to “oppose” abstract painting to figurative painting, according to him, “a painting should be both abstract and figurative. Abstract as a wall, figurative as a representation of a space.” This painting is made with a knife and has been varnished.
