About The Artwork
This work pays homage to the poet Kahlil Gibran and his poem, "Have Mercy, My Soul". It is an expression of my reverence for his work and the impactful weight his words have had on me. The surface pattern is a translation from written language to visual pattern, and it is translated from a passage in his poem. ✹ ...Have mercy, my soul, for you have burdened me with a love I cannot carry. You and love are as one in strength, and I and matter—weakness divided. Shall the struggle between strong and weak be eternal?... ✹ The textile is entirely custom dyed and handprinted with a tessellation pattern, referencing Gibran's Iranian heritage. Each sack is filled with lentil beans, which also pay homage to the poet's geographic roots, and symbolize the burdensome weight referenced in the poem.

My work seeks to communicate through the use of a collectively shared haptic vocabulary. The visual and tactile phenomena of color, pattern, and texture possess the ability to cross sociological boundaries—which is in direct contrast to the many limitations of verbal communication. By using soft materials and textile techniques, I tap into universal memories via our common experience of touch. Meaning is expressed through the careful consideration of materials and the inventive processes used to manipulate them. Where verbal language fails, touch has a commonality that is sincere. My goal is to have the viewer feel as if they are engaging in an empathetic conversation—without a single word being spoken.
