This is part of my new series of "TEXT-BASED WORD PAINTINGS: Thrift Store Paintings Given New Meaning" This artwork is a print mounted on panel and coated with gloss epoxy resin. Exploring the relationship between art history, language, color and humor, I paint and screen print words and sentences over found artworks that find in thrift stores during my travels and from online auction sites. I think that the visual impact of type is sometimes neglected, yet text is an eminently aesthetic form. How does the meaning of a painting change by adding unexpected text over visual artwork? By superimposing quotations and other deadpan sayings over vintage found artworks as diverse as kitschy landscapes or classic golden-age European paintings, I am attempting to elevate words and text to the status of main subject.

As a contemporary artist Taylor Smith explores social awareness through abstraction and figuration with elements of science, traditional still life and portraiture. Smith uses a wide variety of materials and mediums including reclaimed silkscreen frames, discarded analog technology, luxury brands and commercial packaging. She also incorporates mathematics, organic chemistry, mechanics and photography into her work. Frequently working with 8mm film and other analog film mediums, Smith blends the practice of filmmaking and painting. Her recent work explores the relationship between pop culture, luxury brands, political upheaval and crisis to create an unexpected and transformative experience.
