About The Artwork

The Meaning of the Hebrew Letters that make up the “Name of God”. In the background, starting in the upper left hand corner, and moving clockwise, I use the four letters that make up God’s Holy name known as the Tetragrammaton. In Hebrew we read from left to right, and the letters in this order are Yod, Hay, Vav, and Hay. These letters are usually translated as the name Jehovah. Another explanation is that it is a formula explaining how creation occurs. The formula is explained by the meaning of the Hebrew Letters. Yod is the smallest letter in the Hebrew Alphabet. Yod means hand, or a closed hand. When a hand is closed it is small, and what is inside the hand is hidden. It represents life in the world to come that has not manifested itself yet. Yod is an infinite point. Manifestation begins from a zero-dimensional point, thereafter developing into a one-dimensional line and then a two dimensional surface. Hay means window or wind-door. It is an opening in which air or wind can move through, into a house (place). It is effortless movement. The sound of the letter, resembles a mere exhalation of breath, it requires little effort, no movement of lips, tongue or mouth. This is symbolic of the effortless creation of the world. It is a state of consciousness that is positive and up lifting. It is a having complete faith that what you see or desire in your minds eye will become real and solid. Doubt, and negative thinking about the final outcome, can put a stop to the creative process. This Hay reminds us of the importance of a positive outlook, that is effortless to maintain. Vav is a nail, or that which joins together words, sentences and concepts. It is holding or attaching your focus and attention on what you want to create or manifest, which is the vision you see in your minds eye through the window or wind-door. The final Hay represents, the same image or picture seem through the window or wind-door, but now it has become solid and real, and is part of your current reality. In the Artwork the letters are floating in the background. They have not come together from the chaos they exist in, to form God’s Holy Name. It is through our personal efforts, that we can bring the letters together in the order that we recognize as the Holy Name of God. In the front of the area of the artwork is a sculpture image of the Hebrew Letters for the Word “One”. This artwork started out as a 3D Collage with metal parts, wrapped wire, semi-precious gemstones, paint and resin. After the 3D Collage was finished, I photographed itI then took the photograph and put it into photoshop. Here I was able to add as an overlay the Hebrew letters that make up the “Name of God”. Some of the letters were actually photographs of bronze sculptures I made of that particular letter. Other letters were digitally created in the computer, by tracing in the computer, hand drawings of the letter shapes that I designed.

Joyce Steinfeld is best known for her sculpture and artwork, that empowers people to connect with their best self and live an aspiring and inspirational life, with healing love and happiness.   I was born and raised in New York City. I can remember knowing in the first grade that I would be an artist. Art was my passion and I excelled in it in a way that I did not in my other school work. I attended the High School of Music and Art. It was a great honor to go to this school and I traveled on a  bus and train for 3 hours round trip each day to attend school. I have a Bachelor of Fine Arts. College is what brought me to live in California.   My mature work started when I realized I could combine my spiritual interests with my artistic creations, and I started to understand the magic and power of the shapes that I made. Humans communicate in many ways, and my shape creations became a language of its own to me. I started to use words in my art and sculpture. An early project was to design a style for the Hebrew Alphabet. I taught myself the alphabet by looking at different versions of a letter, and then designing my own letter style. I also learned the spiritual meanings connected with each letter as taught in the Kabbalah tradition.  I combined letters to make word sculptures and I expanded to different languages such as Arabic, Chinese, and Sikh. I called this work “Language Art”.  I met native speakers of these languages who helped me, to make sure the artwork would be recognized for the word that it represented. Working together with these people, relationships and friendships developed. I began to feel that we are all one, but just wearing different coats that make us seem different to each other.
Words are powerful, in the Bible, it says: "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God". Everything that is created is first a word. When I abstract the human form I want to express our oneness so I show gender but not race, nationality and ethnicity.
I have public art in the United States and Israel. I had an exhibit in Israel, that I called " The Garden of Hebrew and Arabic Letters". I created a digital book with the sculptures and a poem and translated the book from English to Hebrew and Arabic. I worked with people who helped me with the translations and I was amazed to learn that my poem could not be translated, word for word, but was changed and paraphrased by the translation.
