About The Artwork

Photographs - Iceland summer 2010 Shot by María Kjartans & Marinó Thorlacius Editing María Kjartans Lambda photographic print, Signed and numbered, Limited edition of 7 I always dreamt of hitch hiking in my home country. After years abroad I was ready for some adventures in Iceland. I wanted life to surprise me, amaze me and to make great imagery at the same time. This is how Dream in Places started. I mentioned this to my friend, photographer Marino Thorlacius. At the time he lived in Iceland, I was in London. Strangely enough he was preparing a trip around Iceland in the coming summer so he offered to pick me up in his jeep in Reykjavik, witch he did. We believed this trip could become a fun experiment, a collaboration. It didn’t matter who would hold the camera or press the shutter. It would be more about how we could work with what we got, that is beautiful landscape and each other. We wanted to transform our experience of the Icelandic nature and the surrounding energy to make images where the borders between reality and creativity would merge. We packed a map, an old tent and our cameras and pinpointed places that we thought where charming, exciting and mysterious. The Icelandic cave manual and hot springs in Iceland also came in handy, but we also searched for locations that were abandoned and even forgotten. We drove during the day and shot mostly between 11pm and 2am. This was in the end of July and the best time to get a bit of darkness is around midnight. During this time of the year the Icelandic summer nights can be so stunningly beautiful, almost unreal and the light is ever changing. During these 12 days I had so much more adventures than I had hoped for and I realized that what I had been looking for abroad for so long, could easily been found at home as well. “Follow your dream, be scared but do it anyway. The nature is a surprising and exciting place. Anything can happen”
