About The Artwork

The idea for this work came while walking my dog, a dragonfly landed on my shirt, I kept walking trying to not disturb it, then it flew to a cheek on my face and I shook my head and it fell back on my shirt. But what fell on my shirt it was a spider. I think the spider was in my hair and when I shook my head it fell on my shirt and the dragonfly flew away. Since I was retiring from teaching and my world was changing so fast, I wanted to know about the symbolism and meaning of the spider as totem. A spider on the hair, could be a sign that the person is creating a new reality perhaps in a reactive or proactive way. I also read “a spider in your hair is all about wisdom. Hair is tied to intuition and wisdom, and spiders are all about power, creativity, and self-expression.” It was also so interesting to read about the symbolism of the spider in the native American cultures, especially in the Hopi people with the spider grandmother and the sacred art of weaving. If before I was not too fond of spiders, now I find them fascinating; probably I will explore the subject more in other works.

My paintings are my voice. Each brush stroke is a silent word. Each color, tint and shade stems from a complex spectrum of feelings, ideas, sensations and stories that I hope will have resonance in the imagination and soul of the viewer.I choose to express questions, motifs and beliefs through figurative painting, because I believe it to be the most concrete, clear and impressionable form of artistic expression. Most of the subjects I portray are decisively naked, and this is because I believe that the nude figure, without the protection of clothing, is the greatest way to reveal the deepest truths of what resides within the human soul. The majority of my work explores a range that consists of traditional religious dogma and prejudice at one end, and the instinctive and emotive nature of human sexuality on the other. Though these two subjects are traditionally contrasted as being poles apart, I aim to demystify the prejudices and preconceptions which divide them, and instead, seek to bridge them through a contemporary interpretation that is rational, thoughtful and honest, as well as spiritual and sacred; This interpretation is never intended to be controversial or offensive, but rather, conciliatory and revealing.
